A possible purchase of Huisten Bosch theme park (pictured) adjacent to the site of a casino resort in Nagasaki Prefecture was raised in several Japanese media reports on the 14th (local time) by PAG, a private asset management company in Hong Kong.
GGRAsia on Monday referred names to PAG in connection with Huis Ten Bosch. "We have not made any comment," PAG said of the report.
In 2019, local authorities, the operator of the Huistenbosch and the governments of Nagasaki Prefecture and Sasebosch, announced an agreement to designate some of the land and buildings at the Huistenbosch amusement park as candidate sites for integrated resorts (IRs), including casinos.
According to GGRAsia's Japan correspondent, the site designated for IR has public road access independent of the Huis Ten Bosch theme park itself.
Nagasaki's casino resort proposal was submitted to the Japanese government in late April. Nagasaki's private sector partner is a division of Casino Austria International.
The only other competitors for Japan's IR are Osaka Prefecture and the city. Such facilities had to be allowed up to three under the liberalization agreement.
According to GGRAsia's correspondent, the government is expected to make a decision on both applications by the fall.
Separate civic groups in Osaka and Nagasaki have each recently made defiant moves to aspects of casino resort policies in these developments.
Huis Ten Bosch Theme Park is operated by Huis Ten Bosch Co., a subsidiary of Japan-based HIS Co Ltd. Located in Sasebo, the facility replicates famous buildings and structures in the Netherlands, but is in Japan's semi-farm environment.
Earlier last week, there were reports that HIS Co was considering selling.
On Friday, several Japanese media outlets, citing sources they did not reveal, said PAG was a suitor and that the current disposition by the site's administrators was due to losses from travel and tourism disruptions linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. PAG was previously an investor in Universal Studios Japan, an Osaka-based theme park.
According to an Asahi Shimbun report, Husten Bosch holds 66.7% of the theme park.
