New York lawmakers are working on ways to further protect local gamblers from the negative effects that gambling can have. Last week, two lawmakers introduced legislation requiring all gambling and sports betting ads in the state to warn of potential harm and impact on gamblers.
The bill comes in relation to online gambling, which is widely popular in the state, as Empire State first introduced the mobile sports betting market a year ago. Lawmakers also want to legalize online casino games, which will make gambling much easier for local gamblers. Therefore, it enables concern among residents about the potential increase in problem gambling.
The bill was introduced by Democrats Louis R. Sepulveda and Leroy Corrie on Thursday, January 12, 2023. It was titled Senate Bill S1550 requiring all gambling and sports betting ads in the state to include warnings about possible negative impacts. It also requires all ads to include the New York Problem Gambling Hotline number 1-877-8-HOPENY.
It should be mentioned that the bill has not yet been voted on, and if passed, it will take 16 days for the law to be enacted. Ohio, which recently debuted in the iGaming market, has implemented a similar protocol because it requires clear and visible display of phone numbers as well as gambling messages that have problems with gambling ads.
Problem gambling has been a major concern in Empire State over the past few months. In December, New York State Senator Pete Harkham drafted a bill to regulate predatory mobile sportsbook bonuses. His bill was closely followed by a series of articles in the New York Times criticizing the marketing activities of the state's sports betting brands.
In light of those events, State Senator Joe Adabbo, chairman of the Racing, Gaming and Betting Commission, noted that after the bill on predatory bonuses was passed, Mr. Harcom, and Assembly Racing and Betting Commission member J. Gary Fritlow were called to the New York State Games Commission. It is believed that they discussed possible changes to the rules on bonuses.
Earlier this month, New York marked a year since the state officially introduced online sports betting. In the first year, the state accumulated $16.2 billion in online betting handling. The figure broke the previous year's high set by neighboring New Jersey at $10.9 billion in 2021.
Last year, the state reported total game revenue of $1.36 billion, another record in the United States. It's noteworthy that $1.36 billion of the post-tax GGR has been converted to another record. This is the largest weekly tax revenue in a year, at US$693 million. That exceeded the first estimate of US$500 million in the first year.
